Bagels

A newcomer to the area, hard to miss as you’re traveling down US 78, is the breakfast and lunch spot, Jimmy D’s New York Cafe.

The menu is smaller, as befits someone getting their feet wet. You can have bagels and french toast as typical breakfast items. More lunch like fare includes hot dogs, hot subs (meatball parmigiana and chicken parmigiana), spaghetti, chili, a variety of sandwiches, and a burger. You can get the sandwiches and the burger on a bagel roll, if you like.

Their product is good, but this is one eatery with a lot of competition (e.g. Paneras, Atlanta Bread, Summit’s, Jen’s NY Deli). Virtues it has are: sandwiches are neither tiny nor enormous, they have plenty of space, plenty of parking, and they are convenient to commuters on highway 78. I’m hoping folks find it and it gets off the ground. A good hot sub or reuben is worth some trouble.

I was getting tires for my wife’s car and was hungry. The tire folks had to fetch tires from their sister shop in Lilburn. Could I wait? So I walked across the road to Jen’s New York Deli.

Literally at the crossroads of Five Forks and Oak Road, this small deli survives by word of mouth. There is also plenty of eye candy inside, murals on  the walls. They use Boar’s Head meats, are effectively only open for breakfast and lunch. I had the Rachel, a cousin of the Reuben, but with pastrami instead of corned beef. Quite a nice sandwich, even if you have to gulp it down because the tire folks fetched their tires faster than expected.

It also meant I forgot to take a photo of the sandwich. If you want to see a photo of Jen’s food, follow the link.

Jen’s New York Deli: at the corner of Five Forks Trickum Road and Oak Road, across the street from the Rite-Aid pharmacy is this little hole-in-the-wall. Unlike most chain food at this corner, this is a Lawrenceville original, in a location that might as well be part of Snellville. Open essentially for breakfast and lunch, Jen’s Deli offers bagels and good, inexpensive sandwiches for people on the go.

The inside is small, with just a few chairs and tables, and there is a really nice mural, a take off on old movie posters from years past, opposite the steel cabinets stuffed with bagels and meats.

If this deli lacks anything relative to the bigger sandwich shops closer to the perimeter, it’s the prepared foods a shop like Alon’s might have. But what it has is good, and inexpensive. A sandwich and coke costs less than $7.00, for example.

Verdict: If you’re in the area, give this place a try. You won’t be disappointed.
