I found Papi’s on a day when I couldn’t choose a place to eat. I ended up on Duluth Highway, heading south towards Lawrenceville. At roughly the intersection of 316 and Duluth Highway, I caught Papi’s out of the corner of my eye and turned. At the time I thought Papi’s was a “one of”. Only later did I find out it’s the fourth edition of a small Atlanta chain, and very well respected. At the time, though, I was just hungry and curious. I’d had conversations with men wanting to set up Cuban restaurants in the Lawrenceville area. Was this one of those, a new start up?
Inside, there were chairs and booths mostly circling around a bar in the middle. There was outside seating, but the day was too warm to really want to sit outside. The crowd ranged from ordinary families to beautiful couples dressed to the max. Staff was around; my waitress was good and dropped by my table often. Seating was soft and woven, as opposed to wooden, and the green plastic palm tree leaf place mats on the tables kind of cute.
Though there is Caribbean in the name, there is precious little Caribbean food here. It’s essentially a Cuban eatery, with the option of getting jerk wings and a jerk chicken sandwich. No peas and rice, no patés, none of the accoutrements of a serious Caribbean place. It does have a nice selection of Cuban foods. While looking over the menu, I ordered a salad and also a Cuban sandwich.
The salad was decent, not overwhelming. The mango vinaigrette wasn’t bad, but I’d much have preferred a balsamic. I don’t need stray sugar in my foods, and the mango product was a little sweet. The Cuban, as well, was good, and the shredded pork, ham slices, and melted cheese quite welcome. But the bread looked like a regular po’ boy loaf, and not the flatter grilled breads I’m accustomed to seeing with a Cuban sandwich. The taste was just a little different as well. As I had Cubans regularly when I lived in Orlando FL, it left me wondering what accommodations had been made in the sandwich so far “north”.
I’ll note that other reviewers (examples here and here) of other locations have much the same reaction, that the food is good and worth some trouble, but not really exceptional. As there is simply nothing like it in this part of Lawrenceville, I’m sure Papi’s will do well.

Next time you are looking for somewhere to eat in Lawrenceville, try Pura Enchilada! They serve gourmet Mexican food that isn’t Yanqui-style (no Speedy Gonzalez lunch special). My favorite is the potosina (made with goat cheese). They have an online menu: http://www.puraenchilada.com/

We just went last Friday. It was great. The congri, vaca frita, masitas de puerco and the fried yuca and the garlic sauce for the yuca was super. The mojito drink also excelent. The best cuban restaurant in Ga. so far.

Just went tonight for the first time. The wait staff was very unprofessional. We were told a waitress would be with us in a little while because she was eating. After we ordered they came out 10 minutes later to let us know they were out of half of the orders. The food all came out at different times, and I had to wait an extra 5 minutes after my order came to get black beans.
They said the manager was coming over, and never did. We had to ask to speak with him before we left. When he came over he said it was his day off and he came in, offered no solution to rectify the bad experience.
I come from S. FL and definatley had high expectations for this Cuban diner, and was let down on all fronts. My first time will definately be my last.

Too many folks equate Jamaican with Caribbean and that’s just not the case. There are more Spanish speaking places in the Caribbean than English ones. Point is, the food could easily be considered Dominican, Puerto Rican, or even Cayman. I believe that Papi’s is more representative of the Caribbean world than jerk-flavored food. Granted, Gwinnett is not considered a hot-bed of Spanish Caribbean culture.
Weekends are nice at Papis. Patio, a solid band playing bachata, salsa, and merengue. The food IS legitimately good, and a very good value. Alcohol, now that’s where they make their money. The mojito is solid, but it’s Buckhead prices with a 30043 zip code. Worth trying, buit not worth having more than 1 at $8 a piece.
Worth trying

Not to rain on your parade or anything but the only places in the Caribbean that speak Spanish are Cuba, Puerto Rico & the Dominican Republic. Now try to tally how many speak English. Just sayin’….

Love the food. Don’t try to pull up the website that is printed on their menu though – it is a XXX rated site. I sure hope they fix it soon.

My wife and I recently went to that place Saturday for lunch. Food was great and the service was excellent. Since I am from the Caribbeans and both of us lived in Miami and NY we had hight expetation of how Cuban food suppose to taste like. The setup is nice and they have outdoor seating. I tried the Cuban sandrich and my wife had a chicken dish that comes with black beans & rice and salad. Both meals were excellent. The mojito drink was also excelent, I had two Mojito’s. Now, I finally found the best cuban restaurant in Ga. Hightly recommend.

For years I dined at their location in Midtown (and still do as it is near my workplace). The food is excellent, but the space is cramped.
I am delighted that they opened up a location in Lawrenceville, just 6 miles from my home. The space is lovely and the food delish!!

Very poor customer service, waitress never came after sitting for 15 mins on a non busy day. Manager was very rude when asked why no service. I have eaten at the Stockbridge location for years but I would never go back.
