Albatross Bar and Grill is so good looking I’ve been using photos of the outside and promising to review it for a while. Finally I had my chance, this Labor Day weekend, and peeked inside to see what the fuss is all about.

Inside it’s compact, and the day I showed they were more about Texas Hold ‘Em than anything else. The players filled the entire middle of the bar, and this affected service markedly. I was mostly wanting to eat, and had little interest in the NASCAR on one television or the Oklahoma Sooners on the other.

One thing to note is they have a “house beer”. It’s a $2 pint of this beer and though it is lighter and probably has a lower gravity than I prefer, it was actually pretty good.

The menu largely offers simple, basic foods. There are no frills of any kind here. The upside is that nothing on the menu, but for huge orders of wings, costs even $10.00. I ended up ordering nachos and after, a hamburger. Thanks to Texas Hold ‘Em, it took a while for the food to arrive, but it did.

The nachos were decent sloppy fun and the hamburger was tasty. If anything was a partial turn off, it was the french fries with the burger, which looked and tasted too much like the frozen supermarket kind. C’mon, it’s just not that hard to slice a potato, or get a modern equivalent of a Veg-O-Matic to do the same.

Verdict: Nice neighborhood bar, simple foods and inexpensive pints. Recommended.
